A lakeside city of quays, banks and international institutions, where the Rhône leaves Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc stands on the horizon.
Geneva expresses luxury through discretion rather than display. Lake views, diplomatic institutions, watchmaking, private banking and Alpine proximity create a city of quiet international power.
Geneva is the western gateway of the collection. Its airport is a few minutes by train from Cornavin station, Lausanne about forty minutes along the lake, and Annecy and Évian-les-Bains less than an hour by road across the French border. For a traveller arriving from abroad it is the natural first night; for one who lives nearby, it is the point from which the Lake Geneva shore, Savoy and the Valais resorts all open within an easy morning.
Geneva sits at the south-western tip of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône flows out of the lake towards France. The Old Town rises on the left bank around the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, where Calvin preached and the Reformation made the city its “Protestant Rome”. Below it lie the banking streets and the shopping of the Rue du Rhône; across the water, the grand hotels line the Quai du Mont-Blanc.
Its international character is concrete rather than abstract. The Palais des Nations, the Red Cross and dozens of organisations fill the parkland north of the station, and French is spoken with a hundred accents. Beyond the centre lie Carouge, built by the kings of Sardinia with an Italianate calm, the vineyards of the countryside, and the Alps within an easy drive.
Late spring and summer are the lake’s season: the Jet d’Eau plays against blue water, the Bains des Pâquis fill with swimmers and the terraces of the quays stay open into the evening. Spring also brings Watches and Wonders, when the watchmaking houses present their new collections and the city’s hotels are in heavy demand.
Autumn is clear and quiet, with the vineyard harvest around the city. Winter can be grey and swept by the bise, the cold north-east wind, yet it has its own pleasures: fondue at the lake baths, the Escalade festival in December with its chocolate cauldrons, and the ski resorts of Switzerland and Haute-Savoie little more than an hour away.
Geneva’s great hotels face the water. Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva, opened in 1834, stands where the Rhône leaves the lake; Beau-Rivage Genève, run by the same family since 1865, and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva share the Quai du Mont-Blanc; Hotel President Wilson, a Luxury Collection Hotel looks across the lake to the Jet d’Eau; and Mandarin Oriental, Geneva lies on the river quay of the right bank.
LVXE books them through Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Mandarin Oriental Fan Club and Marriott STARS & Luminous — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges each programme attaches to the stay. For the Beau-Rivage, LVXE advises on and arranges the stay directly. Lake-view rooms on the quays are the first to go during Watches and Wonders and in high summer.
