Évian-les-Bains

The French Shore.

A Belle Époque spa town on the southern shore of Lake Geneva, facing Lausanne across the water, with the mountains of the Chablais rising behind it.

The French Shore · The Heart of Europe

Évian is the French shore of Lake Geneva, about an hour by road from Geneva and around thirty-five minutes by boat from Lausanne-Ouchy. It offers what the Swiss shore looks at from the other side: a spa town built around a mineral spring, a palace hotel on the hillside, golf and a slower, older pace, with the Vaud Riviera always in view.

The place

Évian owes its existence to water. The spring discovered at the end of the eighteenth century brought a cure town of pump rooms, casinos and grand hotels, and the former thermal establishment, now the Palais Lumière, still stands on the lakefront as a cultural centre with exhibitions. The town is compact: a long promenade with plane trees, the landing stage for the lake steamers, and streets climbing towards the hotels above.

Behind it lie the Chablais and the Pays de Gavot, with villages, pastures and the Dent d’Oche above the lake. Thonon-les-Bains and the medieval village of Yvoire are short drives away along the shore. The Hôtel Royal, on the hill above the town, hosted the G8 summit in 2003 and the G7 summit in June 2026.

When to go

Late spring and summer are Évian’s season, when the lake is warm enough for swimming, the boats run frequently across to Lausanne and Montreux, and the gardens and terraces of the hotels are fully open. In July, the Evian Championship, one of the major tournaments of women’s golf, is played at the Evian Resort Golf Club, and in early summer the Rencontres Musicales d’Évian bring concerts to La Grange au Lac, the wooden concert hall in the resort’s woods.

September and early October are calm and clear, good for walking in the Chablais and for the spa. Winter is quiet on the shore, with the ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil within reach; some of the resort’s restaurants and facilities keep shorter hours out of season, so dates are worth checking before planning a stay in the cold months.

Where LVXE stays

The Hôtel Royal, opened in 1909, stands in parkland above the town and the lake. It holds the French Palace distinction, has a Michelin-starred restaurant, Les Fresques, and has its own evian spa, with the resort’s golf course close by. The Hôtel Ermitage belongs to the same Evian Resort and is a smaller, warmer house, with the same golf course and the Thermes evian within reach.

LVXE books the Hôtel Royal through LHW VITA — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges the programme attaches to the stay. For the Hôtel Ermitage, LVXE advises on the stay and arranges it directly with the hotel. Rooms are scarce during the week of the Evian Championship in July, and arriving by boat from Lausanne is the most direct way in from the Swiss shore.
